Obituary of Robert Thomas Charles Pope

POPE. Robert Thomas Charles (Bob) Jan. 16th. 1939-Apr. 17th. 2020 After a long period of declining health in his 82nd. year Bob passed away peacefully at Parkview Meadows LTC (Birchtrail) in Townsend. ON. Predeceased by his parents, Tom and Marjorie (Bowlby). Survived by his wife Doreen, children Robert (Donna), Susan (dec.), Terry (JoAnne), Adam (Andrea), Paul Smith (Angela), Fiona Zawadzki (Alexi). Also survived by 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Brother of Marion Chadwick (dec.), Mildred Penney (dec.), Doris Campbell (dec.), Jane (John Turnecliff) and Bill (Gloria) and several nephews and nieces. Bob was a proud member for 34 years with the Hamilton Police Force, joining up in 1959 as a Constable and rising through the ranks to retire in 1993 as Staff Inspector and Commander of station 31 in Dundas. In 1969 he moved to the Identification Branch where two years later he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant for the branch. In 1975 he became the Force Armourer and trained officers in the use of firearms. In 1982 Bob was promoted to Staff Sergeant in the training division where he was in charge of the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) and the explosive disposal unit. This gave him tremendous satisfaction. Another promotion came in 1986 which made him Inspector for the Regional Force. From 1988 to 1991 he worked as Inspector out of the Kenilworth station where he was promoted once again to Staff Inspector and moved to Hamilton Central. In 1993 when only having a few months at the helm in Dundas he decided to accept an early retirement package courtesy of Bob Rae. At age 54 he was able to indulge in his hobbies. An avid fisherman he was often out in his boat on Lake Erie or canoeing the Northern lakes with Doreen. A very talented man with a passion for wood working. His duck decoys and cabinetry were labours of love. He spent several years renovating the family home in Port Dover. He loved to photograph flowers and was always looking for the right specimen. Even though he couldn’t tell a daisy from a dandelion he did become president of the local horticultural society for 2000-02. A man of few words, compassionate, articulate and didn’t always suffer fools gladly. He will be fondly remembered by many that knew him (well, almost). The Family wish to thank the wonderful staff at Gardenview for the great care and compassion you bestowed upon Bob. Arrangements entrusted to Thompson Waters Funeral Home Port Dover, ON (519-583-1530) In accordance with Bob’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. If desired, donations in memory of Bob can be made to the Alzheimer Society Foundation of Haldimand and Norfolk, Senior Support Services (Norfolk County) or a charity of your choice.
