Obituary of Robert Oswald Hynscht

It is with a heavy heart that his family wishes to announce the passing of Dr. Robert O. Hynscht on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 in his 90th year.

Robert was born on May 23, 1931 in Brno, Czechoslovakia to Johann and Emilie Hynscht.  A survivor of both a world war and concentration camp, he was basically on his own by the age of 14.  When 15 years old, he funded his own education in Germany attending first an academic high school in Landshut and then obtaining his medical doctorate from the University of Munich in 1957.

He moved to Canada in 1958 and completed his residency training in both Sarnia and London, Ontario.  He then moved to his beloved Port Dover where he practiced medicine for 35 years delivering over 3000 babies and caring for his patients with great expertise and compassion.

He met the love of his life Erika Stetter in 1952 and they wed in 1958.  Their ensuing family could always appreciate his great generosity, wisdom, intelligence, curiosity, mentorship and unconditional love.

Robert was preceded in death by his father Johann, his mother Emilie and his brother Klaus.  He is survived by his wife Erika, his son Harold (Mary-Lou), his two daughters Julia (Bruce) and Sigrid (Jack) and his grandchildren Roland, Thalia (Geoff) and Selena (Nick).  He will also be sorely missed by his sister-in-law Eva, her children Erik (Sarah), Armin (Connie) and his European relatives.

A staunch humanist, Robert pursued a plethora of passions including art, modern and ancient languages, culture, nature, science and farming.  He embarked upon numerous adventures travelling around the world with his wife Erika.  A sporting enthusiast, he loved to ski, bike and sail with his family and did so well into his 80s.  His interest in design led to the construction of his own home, a beautiful wood library and an ocean-racing trimaran.

The family would like to thank his incredible palliative care team and Mike Marini of Dover Apothecary for their expertise and caring during his illness.

As per his wishes, cremation has taken place and funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Thompson Waters Funeral Home, Port Dover, 519-583-1530.  A celebration of life will be held at a later date when it is safe to do so.  Donations in Dr. Robert Hynscht's memory can be made to The Vittoria and District Foundation Inc.  These funds will be directed to the scholarship fund which provides financial assistance to financially disadvantaged students for entrance into a university or college.
