Heart-felt words there, Todd. I am certain Dave, Ken and Trevor your Mom and Dad and families would agree they were perfect. I would bump into Dave every once in a while and he'd always greet me with smile, a "Hello Lou" and a few subsequent laughs re the past. I will always remember the Stephen's brothers' cat "Blackie", summer days in the pool, backyard tobogganing and endless Flyers vs. Leafs (Mike Palmateer) road hockey games in your driveway. Just like those late night manhunt games, my memories of Dave and his family at 24 Amor St. will live on for life with me. My most sincere condolences.

Thank you all for coming. You know Dave probably wouldn't have wanted all of this. In fact, he's probably laughing at us all dressed up in our suits and ties. Dave was far more comfortable in a hockey jersey, a baseball hat and jeans. That's pretty much what he is wearing right now. Getting ready this morning I could hear him say – wear your hat, who’s going to say anything. I’m wearing mine.
Kenneth, David, Todd and Trevor. The Stephens boys. Growing up we had our share of adventures and rough and tumble times. I don't know how my mother kept her sanity. Captured snakes were left in jean pockets that went through the wash. Caught fish were placed in bathtubs so we could keep them as pets. Games of sock hockey played in the kitchen. Wrestling matches and pillow fights that usually got out of control but they were fun until someone ended up hurt and crying - usually Trevor or I since we were the younger ones. Jumping off the roof, manhunt in the pitch black and shooting homemade bows and arrows at each other. Looking back I'm surprised we made it this far.
When we were teens we had a few disagreements as brothers do. I remember the time I broke into his comic collection he kept in a locked army box or when I used his ice hockey equipment to play road hockey. He was mad but he left me off relatively easy. No broken bones. And there still is the question of whether I was thrown or jumped down the stairs during a fight. I wasn't really hurt. That is just what brothers do to each other sometimes.
Really though Dave was more like that brother in the Coke commercial that would tease you a little (put something up high where you can't reach it) but cared for you and protected you (like taking the Coke back from the bullies and giving it back to you. - and then dumping the bottle when you went to drink it.) On my first day of high school I was nervous and he said - relax you'll be fine no one is going to bother you, you're Fuzz's brother. I've got your back. We always felt like Dave had our backs.
Dave was smart, he was quick witted, but most of all he was caring. When I befriended Andrew and brought him to Dover, he opened his home and his heart to him. He called Andrew the 5th Stephens brother and teased him like the rest of us. When Nannie became more and more sick he looked after her. He even carried her up the stairs every night to her room when she could no longer climb the stairs herself. Dave always made sure everyone was looked after and comfortable before he would even think of himself.
Kenneth is the dutiful eldest, Trevor is the youngest who wears his emotions on his sleeve and Dave was laid back and even-keeled. He was always the voice of reason. Dave was my go to guy to talk to when family issues arose. He was a great listener and sounding board. He often said a lot without saying anything at all - just a look, a face or a gesture helped you find your answer.
When Dave got sick, we got together more often and spent time together. Not just texts and calls, but some good face to face time. I'm glad I got the chance to look after him for once. I know how much Ken loved going out for coffee or just out for drives with Dave. Dave appreciated everything people did for him. He talked about all of you. He spoke very appreciatively about everything mom and dad did for him throughout his illness - the numerous appointments, the bedside company, the support, the clothes, the food but most importantly the love.
Dave loved his family and friends, but first and foremost he wanted to protect them too. He tried to shield everyone from his pain and suffering. He was stubborn about not telling everyone about his condition. He didn't complain or share too much. He didn't want us to worry or feel bad. He faced his illness with grace, courage and a quiet dignity. I'm so proud of him and of how he kept his sense of humour in face of all of this.
Carly and Christopher were everything to him. He started and ended every conversation with news about them. He was so proud of them and loved them so much. I always admired the caregiving side of my brother - the way he took care of them when they were young children. He kissed boo boos and played with them every chance he got. He was a good man and a great dad.
Driving down to Dover for a visit, we would make a point of first going by the Dover Dairy General store. I would look for the hat and the hair in the window and if he was working which he almost always was, we'd stop and catch up. I know he touched many people with his easygoing demeanour, politeness and sense of humour in the 30 years he worked there. Dave was a Dover boy. For many people Dave was the Dover Dairy General.
We want to thank David's friends. You helped us realize what good friends he had. Your simple words and acts of kindness and caring toward Dave were truly heartfelt. Dave loved you all.
Dave was a goalie and when he got ill he battled long and hard in his crease for Carly and Christopher. He never gave up, he just couldn't stop cancer.
Carly and Christopher we are so sorry you lost your dad. He didn’t want to leave you. Always remember you have 3 uncles who will always be here for you.
We're not ready to say goodbye so we'll keep Dave in our thoughts and in our hearts. It will always be Kenneth, David, Todd and Trevor - the Stephens brothers.
Today remember Dave fondly and pray for his family. We ask as brother Dave would say: I’m okay. Take a break. Go home. Love your family. Love your friends. Be at peace.
Thank you.

My condolences to the family on such a horrible loss. Fuzz was my best friend growing up and I spent many a day with him over at his parents having a blast. Always went to Friday night hockey games at the arena to watch him guard that net with amazing skill. It was a second home for me, and Dave was a very big part of that home for everyone.
Safe trip my friend. Your friendship will always have a special place in my heart.

Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of David. We are heartbroken that Carly and Chris have lost their gentle, easy going, loving father, far far too soon. We promise to do all that we can to keep his memory alive. We are sorry that we cannot be there to pay our respects in person, as we are travelling in BC until Jan 5. But our thoughts and prayers are with you.
