It's still hard to believe.....we always think we have so much time. We put things off, we don't tell the people we love how we feel about them and we pass up opportunities because we will do it "later". Time is a trick. You knew this and your life reflected it. I loved the fact that near the end, you didn't need to rush to do everything on your bucket list, because you lived your life doing what made you happy, spending time with people you loved and travelling to the places you wanted to go. You even said there is nothing you wanted to do, you had already done it. What a great way to leave this earth, feeling grateful for the life you lived and inspiring those left behind to follow their dreams. My life will forever be changed and I will miss you always but I was lucky to grow up with a sister I could confide in, laugh with and learn from. You taught me to enjoy my life and just live. I will miss calling you to talk about our lives and laugh at the crazy things that sometimes occur. If there is a heaven then you are already spending time with all the cool people that passed before you. I can almost see you standing in a field with Laser and Blue. Goodbye my big sis. Thanks for your love and inspiration. xo

Karen said so much through stories of her travels, her art, her laughter and her acts of kindness....But what you said in the letter you had written, by far Karen, is your most powerful. Thank you for being you.

Karen might not have believed in this, but this reading helps me feel not so lost. I want to believe that I will see Karen again, because the heartache is too much not to. "So many people imagine that death cruelly separates us from our loved ones. When our loved ones die, they do not leave us. They remain. They do not go to some dark and distant place. They simply begin their eternity. We do not see them because we are still in the darkness of the world. But their spiritual eyes, filled with the light of heaven, are always watching us as they wait for the day when we shall share their perfect joy. We are all born for heaven and one by one we end this life to begin our life of love in endless happiness." From the writings of Cardinal Newman - 1801-1890

Karen walked softly, spoke gently, opened your mind, made you think differently, touched and inspired with her words, art, poetry and music. She smiled all the time, no matter what. She loved big. I was blessed to have her as a friend.

One night long ago, Karen and I went to hear Harold Kushner speak. He is a Rabbi and wrote the book "When Bad Things Happen to Good People" - among others. His message that night was that in his faith, there is no afterlife, no heaven or hell. He believed, and taught, that what we do here on earth makes a "heaven" or "hell" for those we interact with - whether it is family, friends, coworkers, neighbours. It is our actions and words that we leave with others - that is our "afterlife". It was a powerful message and one Karen and I discussed many times - and reminded each other about several times.
I believe that there is no one whose life Karen has touched, that would say she made it their "hell". Her "afterlife" here is "heaven" for all who knew her. She walked softly, spoke gently, made you think differently, touched and inspired with her words, art, poetry and music. She smiled all the time, no matter what. She loved big.
I was blessed to have her as a friend.

To One and all of the MacEwan family, as well as John and his family. I was so very fortunate to have had Karen in my life; she will always be remembered by anyone who touched her life even for a very brief time. Karen was one of a kind as is evident by her own words in her obituary - very giving, thoughtful, kind, generous, always there when I needed her most, so very creative, inspiring, and so much more!! Karen was given a wealth of gifts to share, and share she did to anyone she met! My memories of Karen are etched in my mind....forever. She made such a difference on this earth in such a short time, and she did it with finesse! I love you Karen, and thank you for being my friend for the past 20+ years! You taught me so much!
