Obituary of DONALD McNEILLY

McNEILLY, DONALD EUGENE McNEILLY, Donald Eugene - With profound sadness the family announces the passing of a precious husband, dad and grandpa, Donald Eugene McNeilly of Port Dover, on August 13, 2010, age 83, after a hard fought battle with cancer and surrounded by the love of his family at the Stedman Community Hospice, Brantford. Cherished high-school sweetheart, best friend and husband for 63 years of Marion (Hanna). Much loved Dad of Sandra Braun (Ted), Donna Ryder (Eugene Jeffery), Lynn McNeilly, all of Brantford, and Steven McNeilly (Kim) of Port Dover. Devoted Grandpa to Russ Braun (Donna), Angie Braun (Dan Murray), Travis Ryder (Valerie), Allison Windsor (Kevin), Brandy Graham-Knapp (Carl), Tyler Graham (Terri-Lynn), Ryan and Kevin McNeilly. Adored Great Grandpa of Avery Grime, Katie, Chrissy and Eldon Ryder. Josh and Isaac Windsor, Dawson Flikkema, Jaceb and Hanna Knapp, Jessica and Jordon Graham. Beloved brother of Marilyn Balch, of Fort Erie and brother-in-law of Bill and Joyce Hanna of Simcoe. Don was predeceased by his parents, Stuart (1969), Lillian (1999), brother, Laird (2004), infant granddaughter, Holly Ann Graham (1979) and son-in-law Jack Ryder (2004). Don and Marion were married in 1947 and raised their family in the home they built together 60 years ago. He retired from the American Can after 42 years and many may remember his being a photographer when a young man, covering local events and family occasions, and often free-lancing for the London Free Press and Simcoe Reformer newspapers. Don was a member of Grace United Church and life member of the Royal Candian Legion Branch # 158 where he served as membership chairman and in the colour party for several years. Don was an excellent carpenter, which is very evident in his lovely home, and enjoyed building unique items for his family which will be forever treasured. Vacations were always spent camping with his family and they have wonderful memories of places visited. Don was a staunch supporter of his wife, children and grandchildren in all endeavours and was always very proud of their accomplishments. He enjoyed being "background man", making signs, building props or whatever was needed. At Don's request cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at THOMPSON WATERS FUNERAL HOME, 102 First Ave., Port Dover (519) 583-1530 at 2 pm, with visitation 1 hour prior.
